Debate fun




CUDS stands for Chittagong University Debating Society. It has started its journey in November 11, 1996.
Inter Department Debate competition:
CUDS for the first time organized the inter department debate competition in March 26, 1997. Since then is has successfully organized 9 Bangla and 3 English inter department debate competitions.

Debate festival:
In 1999, CUDS organized 1st parliamentary school and college debate and a mini debate festival in Chittagong city. In 2001, CUDS organized English school debate in Chittagong city.

UBINIG:
CUDS was invited at UBINIG of eminent researcher Forhad Mozher in 2002 to form a debate club for farmers. CUDS members taught debate to the farmers at UBINIG.

PDP:
PDP stands for Promotional Debate Program. CUDS has been organizing several PDP since 2000 at different remote areas of Chittagong i.e. Shitakunda, Patia, Hathazari, Nazirhat and Bashkhali to promote debate movement. At present it is planning to spread the theory across the country.

DAP:
CUDS has been organizing Debate Assistance Program of slum dwellers.

Dr. Mahbubul Haque Electoral Debate:
CUDS has been organizing electoral debate since 2001. In 2001, the theme of electoral debate was “Prohibit children's involvement in election campaign”. Prominent writer Imdadul Haque Milon wrote an article in Prothom Alo based on this program. Afterwards the then election commission published an Electoral Code of Conduct not to use children in election process.

Debate Workshop:
CUDS has been organizing debate workshops since 2001 both within and outside the university. In 2005 for the first time CUDS introduced thematic workshop.

Inter University Debate Competition:
CUDS organized 5th Inter University Debate Competition in 2002 where CU Debate team got championship beating DU Debate team. Now it is planning to organize an inter university Debate Competition in 2008.

ADP:
CUDS has been organizing Awareness Debate Program (ADP) for privileged students on adolescent issue since 2005.

It is our honor and privilege to give our heartfelt thanks to all of our well-wishers especially those who did a lot to establish the society like professor Abdul Mannan, the then Vice-Chancellor of CU, Dr. Abu Yusuf, the then pro vice chancellor of CU, Dr. Momtaz Uddin Patwary, founder moderator, CUDS and Khan Touhid Osman, the then proctor of CU.

l-Amin CUDS Jugopodarpon Anusthan.
Very recently CUDS organized a debate festival titled: Al-Amin CUDS Jugpotherpon Anusthan. CUDS created a fund for the Sidr affected people by selling tickets of the program at BDT 300 for each person.

Inaugural ceremony:
The two-day long program started on December 12 at 10:30 at Muslim Institute in presence of 600 hundred audience. Eminent social scientist Professor Dr. Anupam Sen inaugurated the ceremony. The session was presided over by CUDS moderator Dr. Mahbubul Haque, associate professor, department of Bangla, CU, while Mr. Shanoor Wahid, senior assistant editor, The Daily Star and editor Star Campus, Mr. Nasimul Gani, chief coordinator, Radio Today, Chittagong, Mr. Shadad Ryad, director MEB Group, Mr. Shadad Hosain, Regional Sales Manager, Nestle Bangladesh Ltd, Mr. Monowar Hosain Ratan, Marketing Manager, Al-Amin Group, Mr. Tazul Islam, President, CUDS and M A Samad Hemal, general secretary, CUDS spoke on the occasion.

Parliamentary Debate:
After the inaugural ceremony CUDS debaters staged a parliamentary debate lilted: 'Ay Shonshod Prostab korche je Apni noy tumy hoke ekmatro sommodhon'. The government bench comprised of Jewel, Emran and Shonkar whereas opposition bench consisted of Zinia, Mousumy and Jewel. The debate was moderated by CUDS ex president Mr. Fuad Hasan, assistant professor, department of Marketing, CU. The debate was full of fun and excitement.

Teacher Student Debate:
The proposal for the teacher-student debate was 'University life is more comfortable for teachers'. The student body comprised of Roby, CUET, Nadia, USTC, Samy, IUB while teachers were Mr. Shoel Ahmed from USTC, Tanjim Afrin from CU and Mr. Moniruzzaman from CU. The debate was moderated by CUDS Moderator Dr. Mahbubul Haque, associate professor, department of Bangla, CU. Teachers were accused of enjoying the university life ignoring the sufferings of the general students. Students basically highlighted teachers politics and their negligence in not taking class and exams in due time which is leading to session jam. On the other hand, teachers tried to focus on students' politics and care free life of students.

Professional Debate:
'We are most sincere than others in profession in Bangladesh' which was the subject of professional debate where eminent debaters from different professions took part. Debaters were Mr. Subir Mahajan, journalist, Mr. Probhat Gosh, assistant HR manager, ACI, Mr. Monowar Mahmud, Marketing Manager, Al-Amin group, Mr. Haider, NTV, Mr. Fuad Hassan, teacher, CU and Mr. M S Abedin, lawyer. The session was moderated by CUDS Moderator Dr. Mahbubul Haque, associate professor, department of Bangla,CU.

Cultural program:
At the end of the day, a colorful cultural session was staged where some renowned singers i.e. Labony Borua and Aurin sang before a full house. In addition to this, CUDS members Auvi and Abedin sang some marvelous songs.

Cultural program was a refreshing event for CUDS members who worked for a month from morning to evening. Day-2, December 13:
Once again debaters and debate lovers gathered on the final day of the program. This time audience was more enthused than yesterday. Organizers were seen more confident. The first session kicked off at 10 am.

Plan Chette Debate:
Plan Chette Debate is a bit different from the other format. Here debaters are to represent several famous personalities from different corners of the world of last century. Debaters pretend that they are the spirit of those persons. But this year CUDS has changed the format a bit. It applied the theory back to the future so that it chose personalities like Aisyaria Ray Bachan, Parvez Musharraf, George Bush, Shane Warne, Maradona and Osama Bin Laden. The subject was 'Sorry! I can't give you anything'. Debaters were Tilak, Charca, Sukhi, IUB, Sadia, IUB, Arif, Laxmipur, Shakhir, Dhaka Commerce College and Shiplu, CU. The debate was presided over by Mr. Shahid Ullah, assistant professor, Communication and Journalism department, CU.

Three dimensional Debate:
This is the debate format invented by CUDS. There are three parties i.e. thesis, antithesis and synthesis. Thesis group comprised of Jewel and Zinia from CU while antithesis group consisted of Nishat and Rishat from IUT where as synthesis group was formed by Sinha, NSU and Sammy, IUB. The session was chaired by Mr. Muniruzzaman Bhuia, assistant professor, statistics department, CU. The topic was ''Shundorjer Uchhalata Medhake Mrioman Kore'.

Fresher-Old Debate:
Proposition bench was formed by three eminent debaters like Bodrul Huda Mamun, Abul Kasem Mahmud Sujan and Probhat Gosh while opposition bench comprised of Rabby, CUET, Joysree, USTC and Hemal, CU. The debate was presided over by Mr. Shahid Ullah, assistant professor, Communication and Journalism department, CU. The subject was 'Nobiner bin Bajuk Chirodin.'

World Format Debate:
The most exciting session was world format debate. There are four parts i.e. opening government, opening opposition, closing government and closing opposition. The debate was staged by Mabroor, IUT, Sammy, IUB, Rishat and Nishat, IUT, Saif and Khairul, IBA and Sinha and Diva, NSU. The session was chaired by Mr. Muniruzzaman Bhuia, assistant professor, statistics department, CU.

Star Debate:
The debate was presented by Fuad Hasan, Probhat Gosh, Sajid Raihan, Saiful Abedin, Tazul Islam and Hemal. The session was moderated by famous actor Shams Sumon. The topic was ' Tomar Chokhe Dhekhe Chilem Amar Shorbonash'.

Closing ceremony:
CUDS Advisor Mr. Hosain Kobir, Professor, Public Administration Department, CU, presided over the closing session while Mr. Monowar Hossain Ratan, Marketing Manager, Al-Amin Group, Mr. Shakil Monzur, head of marketing, Radio Today, Mr. Nurul Afsar, assistant marketing manager, Al-Amin Group, Tazul Islam, CUDS president and M A Samad Hemal, general secretary, CUDS spoke on the occasion. Afterwards honorary crests were presented.
